Landscape with two brothers, pastel and pencil, 40 x 40cm
A preliminary drawing for the story 'Our Expedition' in Tales from Outer Suburbia, about two brothers setting out to find to the edge of the known world.
I had an older sister and we rode bikes around, mapping out the secret alleyways and such, until we could find shortcuts to whitford city and the library.
Ah yes, the days of shortcuts to Whitford City, when it was virtually ringed by bush! You often felt like castaways growing up there. Who would have imagined you could make art out of it? I drew much inspiration from Tim Winton as a teenager, who can write so lyrically about a place like Karrinyup, the banal weirdness of it. Thanks for your comment.
I'm driving past whitfords City a lot these days - it looks tatty, ringed by roads though there are some lovely old trees in the manicured wilderness here and there. and lots of birds. Love the pastels :-)
the story is a real trip.... ew
ReplyDeletethis is totally real cos I lived it. I have the book of course, hillarys, craigie, padbury. Those places are evoked in your art.
