A new collection of illustrated short stories will be published by Allen & Unwin in October 2018, similar in style to Tales from Outer Suburbia (2008), about the fraught relationship between humans and animals. I've been working on this project over the past five years and it's great to see it finally come together. I'll post more about it in the lead-up to its release.
intense! ew
ReplyDeleteOhhhhh ... the intense LIGHT !!!
ReplyDeleteLooks wonderful! Looking forward to it:-)
ReplyDeleteC'est magnifique! The mysterious ambiguity of your images offer a fascinating field for thinking.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Isabelle Gras, I am a PHD student at Université Bordaux Montaigne, in France, and my research
focuses on visual metaphors in picturebooks. I wrote an article entitled "Metaphorical display of Moods and Ideas
in Picture Books" in which I study the two double pages of Rules of Summer with the following texts:
"Never leave a red sock on the clothesline" and "Never leave the back door open overnight". This article is to be
published in Image and Narrative, a free academic online journal available at:
www.imageandnarrative.be
I was granted permission to reproduce these two double pages in my article by Hachette Australia for 12 months.
However, the editors of the journal would prefer a permission not limited in time, since all the editing work is voluntary.
Do you think such a permission would be possible?
Thank you very much for your comprhension and for your amazing images which are a feast for the eyes and the mind.
I am really looking forward to seeing your new book!
Best regards,
Isabelle
Hello Isabelle, great to hear about your research, terrific topic! Generally speaking, permission is freely given for academic use of images if they are non-commercial. I'm sure the period is not important, so long as the use is specific and unchanged. It's not for me to grant permission, but I would say you can go ahead and Hachette would be fine with that. Cheers, Shaun
ReplyDeleteWOW!
ReplyDeleteBig fan! Felt inspired by a talk you gave at SCBWI a few years ago. Wanted to fill up some blank walls in my house... Is this available to purchase as a print or original?....
ReplyDeleteDear Shaun Tan,
ReplyDeleteI am a recent illustration graduate and just wanted to say thank you for your beautiful work. It is through your work that I got interested in picture books and hope to make one in future. Looking very much forward to your new book!
Best Wishes,
Shreya
This is wonderful news! Your work is magical.
ReplyDeleteWill you be touring the U.S. with this new book? So exciting, especially for an Inner City dweller from NYC!
