The Bird King: an artist's notebook US Edition
A new edition of The Bird King (from which this blog gets its name) will be released by Arthur A Levine Books / Scholastic on February 1, 2013. For those unfamiliar with the earlier Australian edition, this is a 128 page collection of various drawings, doodles and preliminary sketches: no finished artwork, and each piece created in a single, relatively short sitting without any intention of publication. Presenting such under-the-desk material casts a little light on a working process that's often just as interesting as finished results. I also wanted to remind young artists that even the most unlikely chook-scratchings (casual drawings) can sometimes turn good. You just have to go with it. You can find out more about it at my site; click here for a review from Publishers Weekly

ReplyDeleteI think this book is a real treasure and I might buy it a second time, just for the colorful cover :D
ReplyDeletelooks great. I'd never heard of it, I'll put that on the wishlist
ReplyDeleteMy husband gave me the first edition of The Bird King a while ago and I absolutely love it. It feels like a gentle and intriguing conversation with Shaun about playful creativity and the difficulties of bringing the fresh essence of ideas and characters through the necessary production process. Unlike Shaun's excellent talks this time I have it captured on paper and can revisit and reflect on it when ever I like.
ReplyDeleteWill you be doing any signings of it in the US?
ReplyDeletegreat
ReplyDeleteInspired by magnificence of your creations…
ReplyDeleteA mask
We were walking through water, such a plain and presunsetly still and oh suddenly in the sides of our way it began, no – just in a single burst longing for 9 mins. Approx.., not shorter, saying - it had EMERGED the jolly beautiful things. It emerged like only the happenings could (with no comments). And after them the thrower. It was a boy and he told us he`s in search of his friend. The best one. And that it was stolen a face from him (his friend),that is used since then like a mask. A mask of a villain pretending with a help of it to be the very all good and beautiful that exist in the world.
Suddenly one of us saw that boy with a lost face. And then all of us saw him again with a knife in his hand. We saw him hitting his head with this knife and saw a villain, beautiful villain already giving back the stolen. And THEN I WOKE UP AGAIN.

Can you show the full front cover picture? I want to see it fully coloured! It's my favourite drawing.
