Empire (red wattlebird), oil on canvas, 180 x 150cm

Another painting in the current exhibition 'Go, Said The Bird' at 45 Downstairs Gallery, Melbourne CBD. The central concept of this group show involves the perception of time, and the title comes from a line in a T.S. Eliot poem, Burnt Norton:

Go, go, go, said the bird: human kind
Cannot bear very much reality.
Time past and time future
What might have been and what has been
Point to one end, which is always present.

  1. Hi Shaun

This reminds me of the wonderful work of Fred Tomaselli. completely different approach to your illustration but this bird has a hint of his work about it. I think you might find his work interesting

    2. ... And yes, there is a fascinating synchronicity here. Maybe a lot to do with the powerful spirit in birds, a feeling of concentrated energy contained in them, and a great ancestry too.

  2. This is so surreal and real at the same time! So many stories could be written just with this image. Wonderful!

  4. Great artwork, the fear and majesty of the magpie, within the urban setting is what I see.
