RULES OF SUMMER Commentary

Preliminary sketch for the painting 'Never give your keys to a stranger', pastel on paper

I've recently added a written commentary on my book Rules of Summer to my website, you can find it here, also as a PDF. Of course, such comments may not make much sense without seeing the book or app first (for readers in the US, a nice edition is coming out in May), but for those already familiar with it, or having a special interest in illustration, I've tried to explain the inspiration behind each painting... if not necessarily the paintings themselves! I hope you find it interesting.

    Thanks in advance ,

  4. Hi...
During my vacation in England, I was lucky to find a copy in a small and nice book shop at York.
What a great pleasure to view the smart and marvelous drawings.
    Best regards from Israel.

    1. Case closed! Thanks for your comments. By the way, for anyone interested in further developmental sketches from this book like the cat-visitor one above, I recommend the app version, which additionally reproduces the entire book in its initial sketched form, as well as a variety of other concept bits and pieces (plus a great soundtrack).

  5. Dear Shaun,

I had the pleasure of re-reading the book with my 18 years old son.
We were trying to think of few additional literature inspirations for the "Rules of Summer". Interesting enough, my son was mentioning Amy Tan's "Rules of the Game", while I was thinking about A. A. Milne's poem "Lines and Squares".

I am sure any reader will discover more layers...

    All the best,
    Gil
